NEW! Online course for middle school and high school students
Send your student online for this twice-a-week English and literary studies course. In response to the closure of schools during the coronavirus pandemic, I’m offering this online class to help replace some of the structured writing, reading, and discussion time that students will miss. Participants will read short literary works together and write analytical and creative responses. Facilitated discussion will expand students’ knowledge of classic and contemporary literature. Homeschoolers’ English and literary studies course
I teach a student-centered English course focused on writing and reading for the development of strong rhetorical and critical thinking skills. Classical and contemporary literature along with a balance of creative, argumentative, and analytical writing sets the framework for individualized instruction for each student. This is a mixed-age group of middle school and high school teens. We are currently reading Dante’s Purgatorio and Pam Muñoz Ryan’s Echo, and we meet once a week at the Threefold Cafe in Chestnut Ridge, NY. Contact me for more information.
I take creative approaches to deepening the practice of writing through group workshops and individual instruction for writers of all ages. Using writing exercises and games, suggested readings, and collaborative revision strategies, I focus on awakening my students’ voices and self-expression.
Past and current clients include Nyack Library, Rockland Center for the Arts, Vermont College of Fine Arts, Orangeburg Library, and River River Writers Circle. I’m also adjunct faculty in literature at Ramapo College and an instructor at Writopia Lab.
While not a “literary art,” this aspect of my creative work connects people to the tradition in which I write. My local libraries love this type of workshop, combining cookbooks, home-cooking techniques, culture and creativity.
For private groups of up to 5 people, I can offer a tour of a local Indian market for ingredients and then prepare a meal with hands-on cooking instruction. Your home or mine, my flat-rate teaching fee is $200, and the ingredients’ cost depends on your menu (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or non-veg).
